  Paul E. Young Tribute
November 16, 1918 - July 23, 2004

On Friday, July 23rd, the Skating Club of Mt. Lebanon lost charter / life member Paul Young. Paul’s passion was ice skating and the instruments (the skates) used for our sport. He channeled his love of the sport into the art of preparing boots and blades for countless skaters far and wide. He was also a tireless volunteer for all aspects of Club activities, and many, many members will always remember his kind and gentle demeanor and smiling, welcoming face at Club ice sessions, club parties, Board meetings, the annual Club Invitational Competition and just about every test session.

Mr. Young was a lifetime resident of Washington , PA. He graduated from Trinity High School in 1936 and also attended Washington and Jefferson College . He served as a pilot in the Army Air Force in World War II, flying B-24 missions in the Pacific. He married Jean on November 24, 1951 . Paul then turned his long-time hobby into a reality, when he and Jean opened Young’s Skate Shop, where his passion and honed skills quickly gained him a national reputation for his blade sharpening, mounting and boot fitting techniques. He fitted many national and Olympic skaters including Caryn Kadavy, Suzanne Semenick and Michael Seibert, and he gave countless local skaters the same attention to every detail of each pair of their skates, regardless of their ability, status or age.

Paul was a gentleman, a fine craftsman and model representative of our skating community. He will be sorely missed.
